The second set focuses on nature itself, beginning with I Am the Great Sun by Jussi Chydenius, followed by two movements of F. Melius Christiansen’s Celestial Spring, and ending with The Sun has Gone Down by Leland B. Sateren. The third set, which we are calling “The Call of Summer,” features three of the Songs of Farwell of Charles Hubert Parry, contemplating the end of life and transition into heaven. The fourth and final set tracks the various stages of romantic love, from attraction and flirtation through courtship, love, and a final goodbye.

Four composers will be featured during the concerts. The composers will include:
- Nino Rota – Known for his collaboration on the Academy Award winning score for The Godfather II, his Trio for clarinet, cello and piano is a roller-coaster ride of moods.

- Bernard Herrmann – A hauntingly beautiful Quintet for clarinet and strings will showcase this Hollywood film composer famous for film scores in Psycho, Vertigo, Cape Fear, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Citizen Kane.

- Erich Wolfgang Korngold – Setting the swashbuckling tone for The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Sea Hawk, his substantive and delightful Piano trio shows an incredible ability to convey mood with grand gestures.

- Ian Honeymoon – Originally from Oregon, Wisconsin, Honeymoon has written music for dozens of feature films, short films, TV shows and was a collaborative composer and arranger on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. His suite from the feature film, Lilly the Witch: The Dragon and the Magic Book, represent exciting works as Honeymoon’s early influences include Oakwood Chamber Players violinist Leyla Sanyer.

The Movies concerts are part of National Chamber Music Month (NCMM), a nationwide initiative organized by Chamber Music America. For more information on NCMM, visit www.chamber-music.org/ncmm.

These 12 movements of music will be followed by a champagne reception.

Saturday May 4, 8 pm at Mills Hall, 455 North Park Street, Madison.

Saturday May 4, 8 pm at UW Music Hall, 925 Bascom Mall, Madison.
The Wisconsin Union Theater presents Zoe Keating, Kate Corby & Dancers.

Zoe Keating presents a very creative and original music experience through her incredible cello and a foot-controlled computer. By layering and looping herself live, she alone orchestrates an incredible work of art, such as her recent album Into the Trees. When Keating is not performing, she has her hand in many other musical facets. She is currently composing the soundtrack to an independent film, “The Happiest Place,” and she is deeply involved in the issue of musicians’ rights. Her music has been played across many different spectrums, from the new CBS show “Elementary,” to ABC, BBC, to Apple, to Patagonia, to mention only a few. Zoe Keating’s one-woman performance is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Kate Corby & Dancers, a dance company centered on physicality, emotion and social inquiry, will also be performing. Corby is an associate professor of dance at the University of Wisconsin and her world-renowned dance company is certainly something worth seeing.

Robert Kyr is professor of composition and theory at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, and chair of the composition department, where he has developed new models for teaching composition. The program at Oregon is presently one of the largest in the United States and in addition to teaching, Kyr directs the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, the Music Today Festival, and the Vanguard Concert and Workshop Series, as well as the Pacific Rim Gamelan.

http://www.robertkyr.com/Home.html

According to Beverly Taylor, choral conductor:
“Kyr’s sense of music comes from old traditions, so although it was written in 1995, it sounds at times both modern and ancient. He uses suspensions and long intertwining lines that have dissonances and resolutions. The Passion is a common subject in older music and Kyr uses old music styles and techniques to great success. It’s a modern look at ancient traditions. There is no need to shy away from this because it’s a contemporary work. The music is interesting and beautiful and something everyone can enjoy. There is nothing strange about it. It is accessible, tonal, engaging and filled with beauty and character – it’s just not that old.”

Sunday April 28 at 12:30 pm at the Chazen Museum of Art-Brittingham Gallery III, 750 University Ave. , Madison.
Sunday afternoon Live presents the Pro Arte Quartet.

Sunday Afternoon Live from the Chazen welcomes the Pro Arte Quartet (Suzanne Beia, violin; Sally Chisholm, viola; Parry Karp, cello; and David Perry, violin). The Pro Arte Quartet continues to maintain an 85-year tradition of dedication to classical and contemporary string chamber music. In addition to their residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where duties range from formal concerts and radio broadcasts to a variety of educational activities, the quartet tours nationally and internationally, often presenting premieres of new works, many of which are written for the ensemble. Founded in 1912 by violinist Alphonse Onnou, the Pro Arte Quartet became the Court Quartet to Queen Elizabeth of Belgium. Its world reputation blossomed in 1919 when the Quartet began the first of many tours and earned such acclaim that composers, notably Milhaud, Honegger and Bartok, gave the ensemble new works to introduce. By 1926, the Quartet made its debut in New York and toured American cities. Their first visit to Madison was in 1938. Two years later, the musicians accepted a residency at the UW–Madison, the first such residency in a major American university. Today, the Pro Arte functions as a resource for the university and the state.
