Friday, 7 February 2014 | Kiosk Collective

Today in 1971: Women in Switzerland are granted the right to vote in national elections and to stand for parliament for the first time in their nation’s history.

This happened through a national referendum in which only men could vote, passing some 621,000 to 323,000. A previous referendum in 1959 failed 2-1.

It’s This Weekend’s Action Calendar!

Tonight is “President Obama, Have a Heart: A Madison NoKXL Valentine Fundraiser!” Make a valentine to send to President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry, sharing a Valentine’s wish for them to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline. There is a suggested donation and proceeds go toward the costs of training and organizing local people to stand against the Keystone XL pipeline in peaceful, dignified civil disobedience. All supplies will be provided. This is tonight from 6 to 9pm at Brocach, Upper Floor, 7 West Main Street. For details, search on Facebook for NoKXL Madison.

Tomorrow is a forum with Nader Hashemi and Danny Postel of the University of Denver Center for Middle East Studies, and Amitabh Pal of the Progressive magazine titled “Syria: the Three-Sided Civil War, International Solidarity, and the Peace Movement.” This is co-sponsored by Peregrine Forum of Wisconsin, the Progressive magazine, and the University of Denver Center for Middle East Studies. This is tomorrow at 7pm in Room 200, 122 State Street. Admission is free, and voluntary donations are appreciated. More info at 608-442-8399.
