Today in 1974: The Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, or ERA, was passed by both houses of Congress with two-thirds majorities.
The amendment, to give women full equality under law, was ratified by the legislatures of only 35 states, short of the required three-quarters of the 50 states, and thus never became law.

This year, Madison Public Library is offering free tax filing for individuals, courtesy of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA. VITA will be at the Hawthorne Branch of Madison Public Library, 2707 East Washington Avenue on Saturday, March 23rd and April 6th, from 9am to 1pm. Appointments are 20 to 30 minutes. The Wheelchair Recycling Program offers low cost, refurbished mobility and medical equipment to people that may not have the resources to obtain them new. They have wheelchairs, walkers, bath items, grab bars and other assistive equipment for purchase. There are offices in Madison and the Greater-Milwaukee area.
