Today in 1971: after a breakdown in negotiations between officials of New York State’s Attica Prison and inmates, the inmates seize a cell block and take thirty two guards hostage.
A thousand National Guard, state troopers and local police storm the facility. A rain of bullets slaughters thirty-two of the prisoners and nine of the hostages. Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who has refused to take part in bargaining, supports today’s attack.
