Sunday, 22 September 2013 | Kiosk Collective

Today in 1864: During the Civil War, in a series of battles around Chaffin’s Farm near Richmond, Virginia, black troops capture Confederate entrenchments at New Market Heights. They make a gallant but unsuccessful assault on Fort Gilmer, and help repulse counterattacks on Fort Harrison.

Today’s battles will win Congressional Medals of Honor for thirteen black soldiers. During the Civil War, one hundred eighty five thousand blacks will serve in the Union Army, fighting in four hundred forty nine battles. One out of every four Union sailors is black. Almost thirty eight thousand black soldiers will lose their lives in the war.
