Last week, the simmering tension in Istanbul boiled over once again. The recent death of 14-year old Berkin Elvan from injuries sustained during a police crackdown on Turkish protestors last summer, sent thousands into the streets once more. Turkish riot police responded harshly, using tear gas, water cannons and armored personnel carriers to clear the protestors from the streets. At least two activists were killed and dozens injured. Photojournalist Jenna Pope, a Wisconsin native now based in New York, was in Turkey at the height of last summer’s protests, and she joined the Monday Buzz on March 17 to give us her perspective on events in Turkey.
