5:09: Two versions of J.S. Bach’s chorale prelude “Fervent is My Desire” BWV 727 featuring Hans-André Stamm (organist) and the University of Wisconsin Wind Ensemble conducted by Scott Teeple (recorded in concert October 5, The wind ensemble version is based on an arrangement by Lucien Caillet.
5:15: Two minuets of the French Baroque composer Jacques Duphly (1715-1789) performed by harphichordist Jonathan Rhodes Lee.
5:34: Agnus Dei (a concerto for bassoon and mixed choir a capella) by Egil Hovland (b. 1924). Performed by Benjamin Coehlo (bassoon, University of Iowa) and the University of Iowa Kantorei conducted by Timothy Salter.
6:08: The Pied Piper Fantasy (1981) by John Corigliano (b. 1938) performed by Alexa Still (flute) with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Sedares.
6:53: :Cloying”: the first of three Bagatelles for flute, piano and cello by Paul Schoenfield (b. 1947) performed by Stephanie Jutt (flute) – Jeffrey Sykes (piano) – Jean Michel Fonteneau (cello) of the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society.
7:08: “The Wound Dresser”, a 1989 work of John Adams (b. 1947) performed by baritone Paul Rowe with the University of Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Smith. The text comes from the poetry of Walt Whitman. This performance was recorded live in Mill Concert Hall on October 6, 2011.
7:30: “In Wartime”, a 2002 work of David Del Tredici (b. 1937) performed by The University of Texas Wind Ensemble conducted by Jerry Junkin. The piece is in two sections: “Hymn” and “Battle March”
7:51: A montage of recordings of popular songs from the late 1930′s and early 1940′s based on the “Humming Chorus” from Giacomo Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly”. The performers include the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala of Milan, Carlo Buti, Rina Ketty and R. A. Dvorský. These were hits in both Axis and Allied nations during World War II and dealt with the separation of lovers during wartime.
7:56: Nora Bayes sings “Laddie Boy” by Gus Edwards and Will C. Cobb. The recording, with an orchestra conducted by Josef Pasternack, was made on July 15 1917.
