Tod Ohnstad, State Representative, Talks About The Mining Bill

Tod Ohnstad, a freshmen state representative in the 65th assembly district representing the Kenosha area, came by the studio on February 7, 2013. Among his many duties he has been placed on the mining committee. Tony and Tod speak about the recent legislation that has been put on the fast track allowing an open pit iron mining operation to be created in northern Wisconsin. The bill is controversial because it lets companies bypass environmental laws that protect fragile ecosystems in the state.
Riding Fury Home: A Memoir

Chana Wilson’s, Riding Fury Home: A Memoir, is book about the challenging relationship Chana had with her mother who was severely mentally ill. At age seven her mother put a gun to her head and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed and her mother lived, however her mother was sent away to a mental hospital. Many years later, Chana, a care taken of her heavily medicated depressed mother, finds out the source of much of her mothers deep sadness. Her mother had had an affair with another married woman. Her daughter also found out how 1950’s doctors tried to cure her of her attraction to women with intense psychiatric treatment. Chana Wilson joined the buzz by phone on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. George McGovern luncheon with the United Nation

Barbara Nichols, President of the United Nations Associations of the United States of America, the Dane County Chapter, came by the studio on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Along side her was Todd Cummers, the Immediate Past President of the organization. The local chapters “provide local information regarding the United Nations goals that relate to social justice, humanitarian efforts and peace keeping,” said Nichols.
Life As A UW Madison Medical Student

What is life like for a UW medical student? Well despite both being a little under the weather, Olga Yashira Diaz and Surbhi Singhal spoke today about their first year as medical students. It’s a challenging process, due to it’s uncertainty, Olga said when talking about getting into school, but she found along the way that although there were many steps, she enjoyed the process. It’s a large adjustment going from undergraduate to grad school the two agreed. “Prioritizing your studying is important,” said Olga. Surbhi added a bit more bluntly, “It is very time consuming.” Olga and Surbhi are M.D. Candidates, Class of 2016. The African American Community Health Advisory Committee

Shanda Shrugs, a consultant with the African American Community Health Advisory Committee, spoke with Aaron Perry this morning about the organization. The organization has a mission of raising awareness of large health issues facing African Americans and other diverse communities. They also advocate for health education and a healthy life style. Aaron Perry, the Tuesday host, is so inspired by the work the organization is doing he had pledged to help bring the organization to Madison. A UW Physics Show You Already Have A Ticket For

Well, likely, as the ten shows are all sold out. That’s 3000 tickets! Now Madison is a city that has more degrees in the average household than a thermometer yet even with the college population it might be surprising to some that so many people love physics. We asked Mike Randall, Senior Outreach Specialist of Wonders of Physics, how the show got so popular. “Explosions,” he said with a laugh. “ People like explosions.” Heart-broken that you are not one of these three thousand? Well, there is a Physics Fair event on Saturday, February 16th at the Chamberlin Hall from 11AM to 4PM. That’s free and open to the public and you don’t need one of those pesky tickets. Standing recently attended a performance at the Madison Overture Center and collected excerpts from the performance as well as a few interviews. The Paul Heenan Public Hearing

Last week we had Amelia Royko Maurer and Stephanie Rearick in the studio to talk about the tragic death of Madison musician Paul Heenan. Heenan was shot to death by a police officer in early November of last year. The circumstances of his death have left many friends and neighbors asking questions about the police’s policies.
