Ruth Wilson Gilmore on Prison Abolition

Thursday, 27 March 2014 | A Public Affair

What is the function of today’s prison system? How do we explain the mass incarceration rates? Check out this addition of A Public Affair with Allen Ruff where him and his guest discuss the issue of prisons in our society.

On March 27th, host Allen Ruff had on guest Dr. Ruth Wilson Gilmore to discuss issues of imprisonment and the prison abolition movement. They begin conversation around what the movement stands for along with other related topics in line with imprisonment in America. For instance: how does relentless dispossession in a racialized capitalism relate to the mass incarceration we see in our society? Another topic being why are over-militarized police bringing down the “death penalty” on the street largely largely affected the marginal group of young black males.
