On this day, 59 years ago, the U.S. Senate voted 67 to 22 to censure Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy. The Senate resolution said that McCarthy “acted contrary to senatorial ethics and tended to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute, to obstruct the constitutional processes of the Senate, and to impair its dignity; and such conduct is hereby condemned.” This effectively brought to a close the political career of “Tail Gunner Joe,” one of the most feared politicians in U.S. history. McCarthy served the remainder of his term in the Senate, but took to drinking heavily and died from complications associated with alcoholism in 1957. History professor Ellen Schrecker of Yeshiva University has written several books on McCarthy, political repression and intellectual freedom.
