Last week the Department of Energy reported the rate at which nuclear waste was leaking from a nuclear facility in Olympia, Washington. At 560 square miles, Hanford Nuclear Plant is described as the most contaminated nuclear site in the country with an estimated one million gallons of nuclear waste leaked into the soil at present date. Tom Carpenter spoke with the 8 O’clock Buzz by phone on February 20th, 2013. He is the Executive Director at Hanford Challenge, an organization focused on the cleanup of the Hanford nuclear plant site. The facility was created in the 1940’s as part of the Manhattan Project. The site produced the plutonium for the trinity test, the first atomic blast. The site also produced the plutonium for the Fat Man bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Carpenter spoke with WORT about the whistle blowers from the plant who brought this controversy into the public eye. more »
