With the announced retirement of Police Chief Noble Wray, the Madison Police Department stands at a critical point. The shooting death of Paul Heenan almost a year ago shook the Madison community in more ways than one. Not only did the community mourn the tragic loss of Heenan, but many lost faith in the Madison Police Department: a department that has historically prided itself on community-based policing now faces questions about its policies for use of deadly force. Cheri Maples is a former captain in the Madison Police Department, an ordained Buddhist dharma teacher and the co-founder of the Center for Mindfulness and Justice. On October 16, the center will hold a community meeting asking what Madison should expect from its next police chief. more »
