On Friday July 20th, Esty Dinur took on the controversial subject of Smart Meters . Smart meters are electronic meters which record energy consumption and transmit the information collected daily back to the utility company in order to better monitor and bill households. Although this subject may seem mundane on the surface, it has sparked a great deal of controversy regarding purported health effects and privacy concerns. Esty first interviewed a proponent of Smart Meters, Jeffery S. Lafferty, an Environmental Epidemiologist for Public Health Madison and Dane County. As an epidemiologist, he is involved with the performance of risk assessment, risk communication, and the evaluation of suspected environmental health concerns. His department has put out a report which has concluded that “A thorough review of the relevant literature suggests that there is little evidence to support an association with any potential health effects that may result from the installation and/or normal operation of the smart meter.” Director of Stop Smart Meters! Joshua Hart, however, contends that “The smart meter debacle is a huge threat to our health, safety, privacy, and wallet.” On this hour of A Public Affair, Esty Dinur attempted to separate smart meter fact from myth.
