Today in 1893: In Hawaii, Queen Lilluokalani’s regime falls to U.S. pineapple tycoon Sanford Dole and pro-annexation sugar interests. With support from U.S. Minister John Stevens, Dole declares himself Hawaii’s president and lobbies for U.S. annexation.
The Senate Foreign-Relations Committee will recommend annexation, declaring it, (quote) “a duty that has its origin in the noblest sentiments that inspire the love of a father for his children.”
In 1898, President William McKinley will sign a joint resolution of Congress authorizing the annexation.
