Today in 1799: The New York state legislature enacts a law mandating the gradual end of slavery.
Children of slaves would not be emancipated until they had served their parent’s “holder” and reached their mid-twenties. It was not until 1827 that a subsequent law declared, “every person born within this state, whether white or colored, is free.”

This Saturday is the Word is Bond Poetry Slam Grand Slam Championship, which will decide which poets will be representing Word is Bond Poetry Slam at the National Poetry Slam in August. The top 10 point earners of the season have been invited to compete in this Grand Slam Championship. There is a cost for this event.
