Today in 1986: The space shuttle Challenger explodes minutes after takeoff. News is that the explosion was caused by an o-ring failure.
This will be followed by a revelation that virtually every safety system in U.S. nuclear power plants uses such o-rings to prevent dangerous leaks. In 1981, the government found that viton, a material in the Challenger’s o-rings, slowly disintegrates when exposed to large amounts of radiation.
By this year, 1986, more than sixty reports have documented o-ring failure in nuclear plants.
It’s today’s Action Calendar!
