Today in 1844: Louis Riel is born in Manitoba, Canada. Elected to the Canadian Parliament, Riel will be denied his seat because he is an Indian.
In 1868, Riel, a Mtis, will lead a rebellion against the government, which is planning to take over Mtis territory without prior consultation. The Mtis will block the entry of colonial governor William McDougall and force Ottawa to negotiate regarding the new province of Manitoba. Riel will flee to Montana to avoid a trial on treason charges.
Riel will return in 1885 to lead a rebellion in western Canada against government-sanctioned speculators who are grabbing Native American land. The Canadian militia will disperse the rebels. Convicted of treason, Riel will be hanged on November 16th.
