Today in 1924: Mohandas Gandhi begins a purifying 21-day fast for Hindu-Muslim tolerance and unity following communal riots in Kohat on India’s northwest border in what is now Pakistan.

A Hindu, Ghandi spent his fast at the home of Mahomed Ali.
