Today in 1961: labor organizer Elizabeth Gurley Flynn is elected chair of the National Committee of the Communist Party, U.S.A. In 1953, Flynn declined a federal judge’s offer to deport her and twelve others to the Soviet Union on conspiracy charges.

In response, she said, quote: “We have no desire to enjoy the fruits of socialism in a land where we did not work for it”. Instead, Flynn and the others received three-year jail sentences and fines of six thousand dollars apiece.

Tonight, the Rock County Progressives host a forum in Janesville on the upcoming Supreme Court election. Speakers will be Lisa Subeck, Executive Director of United Wisconsin, and Representative Janice Ringhand of the 45th District. Escape from the winter doldrums at Olbrich Botanical Gardens’ indoor Spring Flower Show: Wisconsin Woodlands. Immerse yourself in the colors and scents of a spring garden while strolling through Wisconsin’s woodlands. This event is a fundraiser for the Gardens and a small donation is suggested. It runs through March 24th, from 10 am to 4 pm daily, at 3330 Atwood Avenue. More info at olbrich.org.

This year, Madison Public Library is offering free tax filing for individuals, courtesy of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA. VITA will be at the Hawthorne Branch of Madison Public Library, 2707 East Washington Avenue on the following Saturdays: March 9th and 23rd, and April 6th, from 9am to 1pm. Appointments are 20 to 30 minutes. If you are married, both you and your spouse must be present. Call the Central Library reference desk at 266-6350 to schedule an appointment or for questions.
