Today in 1850: Congress passes the Fugitive Slave Act, allowing slave owners to reclaim slaves who have escaped into another state, and levying harsh penalties on those who interfere with the apprehension of runaway slaves.
As part of the Compromise of 1850, it offered federal officers a fee for each captured slave and denied the slaves the right to a jury trial.

On September 25th, the Safe Communities Falls Prevention Task Force invites area seniors to “Only Leaves Should Fall”, a workshop to learn ways of reducing the risk of falls, and staying active, healthy and independent. People across the country will take to the streets this coming Saturday to demand that President Obama deny the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline permit in the most widespread day of action to date in the 350.org effort to stop this disastrous project. Join 350-Madison Climate Action Team members at the Monona Terrace rooftop Saturday at 8:30am before marching around the Capitol Square holding up a 100 foot long “Draw the Line” against tar sands banner and handing out postcards to send to Obama.
