Almost all the voices you hear on WORT are unpaid volunteers. WORT maintains a relatively small cadre of paid staff, but most of us at this station, myself included, do this for no money, just because we want to. Volunteers at a nonprofit station are one thing, but unpaid interns at corporate media outlets are quite another. A New York federal court ruled last year that Fox Searchlight violated Federal labor law with their practice of using unpaid interns for work that could have been done by paid staff. The Center for Investigative Journalism’s Matthew Barnidge joins us now with some follow up on this story.
