Monday, January 20th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a day to remember the profound contributions of not only one individual, but the social movements behind him.
WORT will broadcast the official ceremony at the State Capitol from 12:00 – 2:00PM live on 89.9 FM – and right here on wortfm.org. We’ll also be live at the Overture Center to broadcast the local commemoration from 6:00 – 8:00PM.
The 34th Annual “Tribute and Ceremony” in honor of Dr. King will be held in the Capitol Rotunda at noon. This free event is produced and directed by Dr. Jonathan Overby and will feature music by Chicago’s 100 voice GMAC Gospel Choir, Wisconsin’s Ho Chunk Singers, Leotha Stanley and Friends, and Milwaukee’s Latino Strings Orchestra. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jack Daniels, president of Madison Area Technical College.
The 29th Annual City of Madison observance of MLK Jr. holiday, sponsored by the City of Madison and Dane County and organized by the King Coalition, will be held in the Overture Center’s Capitol Theater from 6:00 – 8:00PM. This event will feature the presentation of the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award by Mayor Paul Soglin and County Executive Joe Parisi, a call to action, and the MLK Community Choir. In addition, civil rights activist, diplomat and pastor Andrew Young will serve as keynote speaker.
WORT will be live broadcasting both events. Tune in at noon and 6pm to help celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and this nationwide holiday.
