Milwaukee Press Club , the oldest continuing operating press club in North America, has awarded three of their prestigious 2015 Excellence in Journalism Awards to stories produced and aired by the WORT news department.
Helena White won first place for Best Long Form Feature Story with “Limburger’s Last Stand,” a look at the last Limburger cheese producer in the United States, Chalet Cheese Cooperative in Monroe, Wisconsin. Dylan Brogan produced. Here’s Helena’s response to the news of the award: “I was thrilled to hear that I won an award. It takes hours to put together just 5 minutes of radio, so it is very gratifying to have that effort recognized.”
Kristian Knutsen won third place for Best Long Form Feature Story category with “UW Board of Regents Seeks to Trademark ‘Wisconsin Idea,’ ” a look at the history, politics, and effects of the Wisconsin Idea™. Dylan Brogan produced.
And Dylan Brogan won first place in the Best Single or Ongoing Breaking News Story category with “Death of Unarmed Teen Sparks Public Outcry,” coverage of the reaction to the shooting of Tony Robinson. Molly Stentz reported and produced. These stories aired in March of 2015, immediately following Robinson’s tragic death.
WORT News Director Molly Stentz was pleased that all three stories she submitted were judged to be award-winning. She added, “These are competitive statewide awards and it is quite an honor to be recognized.”
“We received hundreds of entries for the contest from news organizations and individuals throughout Wisconsin. The competition was judged by professional journalists and journalism scholars from across the country, from San Diego to Syracuse to Alaska to Florida, with the judges expressing pleasure at the high quality of work done by Wisconsin journalists,” said the Milwaukee Press Club.
The awards were presented at the Gridiron Awards Dinner in Milwaukee on May 13.
