John Sayles is an independent film director, screenwriter, novelist, and actor. He has written over one hundred screenplays and directed eighteen feature films, including Matewan, Eight Men Out, Lone Star, and Brother from Another Planet. He is the author of five novels, including the National Book Award–nominated Union Dues (1978) and Yellow Earth (2020).
