Soprano Leslie Damaso and Pianist Jason Kutz won a 2018 MAMA award for their debut album “May Laya” (Tagalog for “There is Freedom”) which featured Kundiman, a Filipino song genre with roots in the independence movements of late 19th Century. Kutz also plays with Mr. Chair, a futuristic electronic/jazz/rock/classical quartet that includes bassist Ben Ferris, drummer Mike Koszewski, and trombonist Mark Hetzler. Together with Damaso, the group will perform selections from their new album, “Nebulebula” at the Mineral Point Opera House at 7:30 p.m. on May 31st. The program will include the group’s distinctive take on classic Kundiman and other cosmic sounds. Damaso and Kutz visited the WORT studios to talk about their music with Peter Haney, host of Tuesday morning’s “Back Porch Serenade.”
