A quinceañera is a extravagant celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday celebrated by many Latinas, especially those with Catholic families. Neither our host, Karma Chavez nor our guest, Rachel Gonzalez had their own quinceañera, but they spend the hour talking about the magical narrative around this opportunity to spend. They talk about changes in the tradition, quinceañera expos, and the influence of social media on quinceañeras.
Dr. Rachel González is the author of Quinceañera Style: Social Belonging and Latinx Consumer Identities. She is a Folklorist and an Associate Professor of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies at University of Texas in Austin.
