PNM’er Will Cushman attended and recorded a very fascinating presentation on the emergence of invasive Zebra mussels into Lake Mendota. So, on this pledge drive edition of the Perpetual Notion Machine, Will presents various clips from that talk given by UW-Madison limnologist Jake Vander Zanden. This talk was sponsored by the Clean Lakes Alliance, and is part of a series of presentations called Yahara Lakes 101, which helps educate the public on issues about Madison’s lakes and watershed. Zebra mussels have been a very prolific species in other Wisconsin lakes and inland waterways and have been very hard to eradicate. They can filter a large amount of water, which can help eliminate nasty Blue-green algae, but they also destroy beneficial biological organisms. And they have the ability to alter the entire ecosystem they inhabit.
