Today, Madison-based Alliant Energy announced plans to close its last Wisconsin-based coal plant by the end of 2024.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the closure of the Columbia coal facility, located near Portage and constructed in the mid-1970s, will help the company avoid about $250 million in maintenance and upgrades.
For more on what the plant’s closure means for the environment and Wisconsin residents, WORT producer Jonah Chester spoke with Elizabeth Katt Reinders, deputy director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.
