An obelisk recently installed on the shore of Marshall Park honors the life of Wisconsin native Mildred Fish-Harnack. The sculpture is located at the site where Harnack, a part of the German Resistance during World War II, spent some of her more peaceful years with her husband Arvid while attending UW-Madison.
Harnack was executed in 1943—via a direct order from Adolf Hitler—for her role in the war. Reporter Chali Pittman sat down with City of Madison arts administrator Karin Wolf and artist John Durbrow to talk about the life of this wartime heroine and the sculpture honoring her.
