Do you remember the events surrounding state enforced brutality at Tiananmen Square? Do you remember the LaPenca Bombing in Nicaragua? Tune in for this special edition of A Public Affair on the anniversaries of these events to hear more!
This Wed, June 4th marks the 25th anniversary of the military crackdown on student led protests in China’s Tiananmen Square. On Monday, June 2nd, our sub-host Norm Stockwell hosted a show featuring WORT’s Helena White who produced an interview with a Chinese student activist who was there. It originally aired on WORT’s Third World View. Following that we will hear a song called “China” written in 1989 by Joan Baez about Tiananmen Square.
In the second half of the program, Norm did a report on the 30th anniversary of the bombing at La Penca, Nicaragua at a press conference in which three journalists were killed, and many more wounded. A print version of this story also appears in a special edition of Costa Rica’s English language newspaper the Tico Times here.
