WORT is seeking a new Country music show host to take over Wednesdays from 9 am-noon. We’ve got some mighty “10 Gallon” shoes to fill those mornings where Bill Malone, partner Bobbie and the whole crew did us so proud for decades. But we’re hoping to find some great new music historians, collectors and fanatics to keep the tradition going strong. Country AND Western, alt. country, rockabilly, country folk, blues and old-time music, and various types of American folk music including Appalachian, Cajun, cowboy Western music styles, etc. are all fair game.
Please see below for a description of what we’re looking for and if you think you fit the bill, send us your application!
Note that currently all WORT hosts are pre-recording programming offsite to be aired via automation at the station. This will hopefully change before too long. In the meantime, WORT will provide you with broadcast software, microphone, etc. if needed and give you all the necessary assistance to produce recorded programming at home for the time being. The following volunteer job description applies primarily to our regular programming procedures. Please ask if you have questions about anything.
Volunteer Job Description:
Wednesday Morning Country Music Host/Producer
Responsibilities: Produce and host a weekly radio program, including on-air announcing and engineering. Operate station equipment within FCC regulations and WORT policies and guidelines. Creatively select and mix music with announcements and other broadcast material, including the Folk Calendar. Enter your playlists, work to create a presence online and provide content for our website and social media. Review new country-related releases and help solicit music from local to international artists, recommending additions as appropriate to WORT’s library. Participate in our on- and off-air fundraising activities. Assist in publicizing all of WORT’s folk music programming, and other volunteer tasks as needed.
Qualifications: A strong knowledge of and passion for country music, from old time country & western to modern alt. country, rockabilly and related music, with an emphasis on classic, historical artists and recordings; familiarity with people, events and resources within our listening area, and enthusiasm for joining in our fundraising and outreach activities. Access to an extensive personal country/folk collection is very important; strong communication skills and dependability are crucial. No previous radio experience is necessary, all training will be provided by the station.
Please feel free to include anything else you think is appropriate, such as: program ideas, playlists and recorded demos. Top applicants will be interviewed and may be asked to audition on-air.
Submit all materials via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by postal mail to WORT Radio, 118 South Bedford St, Madison, WI 53703 Attn: Sybil Augustine, Music Director. The deadline is Monday, August 31 to ensure consideration.
If you’re not chosen to join our permanent lineup, take heart – qualified applicants may be trained to be on our list of substitute hosts.
