Lance Owens is the Director of Artworking. It’s an organization that guides individuals with developmental and intellectual challenges along the path of generating income through art.
Owens came to UW-Madison to pursue an MFA in Visual Arts and Printmaking. He took a part-time job working in an organization focused on working with individuals living with intellectual and developmental challenges.
After graduating, Owens found promoting his own work to be a bit too ego-driven and self-focused. He says he wanted to do something that was more expansive. Combining his background in Fine Arts and his love for his clients, Owens created ArtWorking. That was 12 years ago.
In this archival edition of Radio Chipstone, Owens tells contributor gianofer fields that in working with the artists who participate in Artworking, he’s found kindred spirits.

gianofer (JON nah fer) fields is an Art Historian and Material Culture contributor and curates the Radio Chipstone series. The project is hosted by the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and funded by the Chipstone Foundation; a decorative arts foundation whose mission is preserving and interpreting their collection, as well as stimulating research and education in the decorative arts.
