In addition to the abundance of local musical talent at Atwood Fest 2016, attendees are in for some out-of-town treats. Two bands that could rock your sandals off this year are the lethally gifted Buffalo Killers (from Ohio) and the cleverly named Jane Lee Hooker (from New York City).
BUFFALO KILLERS
Described by Rolling Stone as purveyors of “muscular power-pop with hints of psychedelia and stoner-rock,” this bearded quartet have been busy making seven LP and EP records since 2006. Their second album, Let It Ride (2008), was produced by Black Keys mastermind Dan Auerbach.
Recently holed up in their new analog studio at Howler Hill Farms outside Dayton (OH), the songwriting Brothers Gabbard – Zachary (bass, vocals), who also produces, plus Andrew (guitars, vocals) – have joined forces with Joseph Sebaali (drums) and Sven Kahns (lap-steel & other guitars) to make some barn-shaking noise.
These hard-touring garage rockers are preparing to release a new CD on the Alive Natural Sound label soon. WORT Music Director & Psychoacoustics co-host Sybil Augustine (a/k/a Rev. Velveteen) will welcome Buffalo Killers to the Alchemy Stage at 8:15 Saturday evening.

JANE LEE HOOKER

This bastard child of electric blues and feminist post-punk features five loud women: Dana “Danger” Athens fronting on vocals, Hail Mary Z on bass, Tracy Hightop (formerly of Nashville Pussy) and Tina “T-Bone” Gorin on guitars, and Melissa “Cool Whip” Houston on drums.
Honoring such blues legends as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Winter and Big Mama Thornton, these New Yorkers combine to make a “blistering blues monster capable of whispering in your ear before stomping on your heart.” Their debut album, NoB! (Ruf Records), was released earlier this year, although the original lineup formed in 2013.
“There’s a lot of love in all this,” says Hightop. She invites you to feel it for yourself as Jane Lee Hooker take the Alchemy Stage at Atwood Fest on Sunday at 5:45 pm.
