For years, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have used microscopic hair analysis for forensic evidence, comparing hairs from suspects with those found on the crime scene in much the same way you might compare fingerprints. Based on this technique, the FBI has helped secure thousands of convictions over the years. There’s just one problem. Hair analysis, as the FBI itself has known for two decades, just isn’t that reliable. In light of the FBI’s admission, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers is reviewing some 3,000 convictions based on hair analysis, and so far, has found significant problems in over 90 percent of them. Dee Hall, from the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, has followed the impact of this story in Wisconsin, and she joins Eight O’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing by phone.
