Cast your mind back 100 years ago to 1919, and imagine the shops you might find in a typical Madison neighborhood: a grocery store, a tavern, a flower shop. Chances are you didn’t imagine a dry cleaners! It turns out, dry cleaning goes back to Roman times, and the modern version originated in Paris in the 1840’s. The intersection of Winnebago and Atwood on Madison’s east side, is home to Block Cleaners, a family-run business that has served the city’s laundry needs for 99 years. The cleaners is closing on Dec 8th, less than a month shy of their 100th anniversary, and Helena White went down to Block Cleaners to get this report.
