Alash Ensemble of Tuva

$10 – $30

w/ special guest, beat boxer Shodekeh –

General admission tickets for the concert are $15 in advance, and $20 at the door. Registration for the workshop is $30.

The award-winning Alash Ensemble of Tuva will bring the beautiful and exotic sounds of their Inner Asian homeland to Folklore Village on Sunday evening, March 8, at 7:00 pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm.  Additionally, on the same date, members of the band will present the workshop, “Learn to Throat Sing” from 2:30 – 4:30. For the concert, Alash will be joined by a special guest, beat boxer Shodekeh.

The three musicians who make up Alash – Bady-Dorzhu Ondar, Ayan-ool Sam, and Ayan Shirizhik – have won numerous international awards in Tuvan throat singing, a technique that allows vocalists to sing multiple pitches at one time. Ensemble members also play a variety of Tuvan traditional instruments, contributing to an overall musical experience a Washington Post review described as “absolutely stunning.”

Alash travels the globe presenting their distinctive native music. In the United States they have recorded for Smithsonian Folkways, have been the subject of a TED talk, were guests on an NPR Science Friday episode entitled “The Science of Tuvan Throat Singing,” and have performed at places as diverse as the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, Dollywood, and Carnegie Hall. With their “new old” Tuvan music, Alash stays true to the cultural traditions of their musical heritage, while blending in new influences, to create a captivating and utterly unique musical experience. Band manager Sean Quirk, a Wisconsinite who studied music in Tuva and now makes Tuva his home, provides commentary in English to bridge the cultural and musical gap for the American audience.

Advance tickets for the concert may be obtained through Brown Paper Tickets at https://alashfv.brownpapertickets.com. A registration portal for the afternoon workshop can be found on our website: https://folklorevillage.org/upcoming-events/concertsspecial-events/. You may also call Folklore Village at (608) 924-4000 for either event. General admission tickets for the concert are $15 in advance, and $20 at the door. Registration for the workshop is $30.
