“Black Woman Professor – White University” Nellie Y. McKay at UW-Madison

Thu April 8 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Dr. Shanna Greene Benjamin will discuss her forthcoming book, Half In Shadow: The Life and Legacy of Nellie Y. McKay, and the strength it takes for Black women to pursue their dreams in academia.

Independent scholar and author Dr. Benjamin will discuss her book with Dr. Monica White, Associate Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology at UW–Madison. The Nellie Y. McKay papers in the UW-Madison Archives revealed much about Dr. McKay, a UW-Madison professor who coedited the Norton Anthology of African American Literature. Dr. McKay succeeded professionally in white academia by making deliberate choices, but the price of institutional racism relegated her personal life to the shadows. Weaving Dr. McKay’s triumphs and exclusions together, Dr. Benjamin’s book is a compelling and complex narrative.

The Friends of UW-Madison Libraries are pleased to bring Dr. Benjamin to campus via a virtual event on April 8, a week before her book is released. Together she and Dr. White will tackle the vexing issues raised in the book that persist today. Dr. Cheryl Gittens, UW-Madison’s Interim Chief Diversity Officer, will provide introductions and current context for the event.
