Malian Musicians Habib Koité & Bassekou Kouyate to Unite on Shannon Hall Stage –

Prices for the event are as follows: General Public are $25-34, Union Members are $25-30, UW Faculty/Staff are $25-32, Youth are $20, and UW-Madison Students are $10. Habib Koité and Bassekou Kouyate, Madison favorites and two of Mali’s best musicians, are each an established master in his own right. They incorporate contemporary political subject matter with traditional musical styles to make gorgeous music.

Habib Koité came from humble beginnings, born in Thičs, Senegal to a family with 17 brothers and sisters. He developed a passion for music from young age. His uncle convinced him to enroll in the National Institute of Arts and study music rather than his original path as an engineer. He graduated at the top of his class, secured a job as a guitar teacher at the institute, and began performing with Malian artists, including Kélétigui Diabaté and Toumani Diabaté. He recorded his most famous single in 1991, “Cigarette A Bana (The Cigarette is Finished),” an anti-smoking anthem.

Today Koité is an inspiration worldwide, using traditional Malian music as a platform for contemporary world issues. His unique music style is enhanced by tuning his instrument to the pentatonic scale and playing on open strings. He performs at thousands of venues across the globe and appeared on Late Night with David Letterman.

Bassekou Kouyate is best known as “Mali’s Ngoni Wizard,” a title earned due to his innovations with that stringed instrument. He started playing at age 12 and became one of the first musicians to electrify the ngoni.

In 2005 Kouyate created his band, Ngoni Ba, a quartet of different-sized ngonis. His unique take on Malian music earned him Album of the Year and African Artist of the Year awards from BBC Radio in 2008. He has performed with acclaimed artists such as Sir Paul McCartney and Damon Albarn of Gorillaz fame.

sThe concert is presented by the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Performing Arts. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Media sponsor is WORT, 89.9 FM is the media sponsor.
