Mental Health Awareness/Suicide Prevention (and MoodTrain)

Mon July 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Verge Manyen is an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness and suicide prevention, with an emphasis on removing the stigma around mental illness. He was suicidal a few years ago, and is now “one of the happiest people I know,” and suffers almost no residual effects from depression or anxiety. He’s told his story on many occasions (including Upstage Stigma 2018 and the Real Life Library Series), and also uses both group drumming (in the Madison drum circle community) and improvised rock music (in local band MoodTrain) to help others overcome their issues with mental illness.

In this program, he tells his story as well as the stories of others who have inspired him.

He also interweaves the show with some very pretty, melodic, funky, and totally improvised, rock music from my band MoodTrain (we’ve been interviewed on WORT by Jonathon Zarov). MoodTrain has been a form of therapy for him, because the improvised nature of it teaches him to value self-expression, and shows him that his innermost feelings can benefit the world when shared.

MoodTrain is a groove-oriented, melodic improv rock duo that plays entirely improvised sets of funky rock music. Their sets feature no set tunes, chord structures or framework of any kind; the only rule is that there are no rules. Travis Ziegler (guitar) and Verge Manyen (drums) communicate with each other and the audience by coaxing, teasing, taunting, torturing, painting with and pounding on their instruments while maintaining a groove that will keep any crowd moving. Repeated listens to MoodTrain will change the way your mind processes music.

The goal of this type of activity is to remove the stigma from mental illness. It’s the guilt and shame attached to depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, borderline personality disorder, paranoia and other illnesses that cause those who suffer to withdraw into themselves, often leading to suicide. Verge says, “If I can prevent the loss of even one mother, father, sister, brother, lover or friend, all the time, effort and vulnerability put into this will be worth it.”
