People Talking about Ambiguous Loss and Grief

Mon July 31, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Ambiguous loss, a term coined by Pauline Boss, a researcher who studied the families of missing soldiers in the 1970s, is loss that occurs without closure. Ambiguous loss was first described as “loss without a dead body”. Our host takes a broader definition and explains it as loss that may or may not include death and likely won’t bring casseroles and sympathy cards to one’s door but is loss all the same. Aging, adoptee experience, incarceration, Alzheimer’s, transitions, job loss, empty nesting, injury/illness, immigration, caregiving, loss of home, a missing loved one, family planning gone a way you did not expect, relationship changes, absent family members— all (and more) can create circumstances of ambiguous loss. The search for meaning and understanding preempts, runs parallel to, or can sometimes interrupt grieving and, in some instances, grief remains unresolved.

Three Madison area community members join Meg Rothstein of Larkspur Collaborative Coaching to explore the concept of ambiguous loss from their own personal standpoints and life experiences…three courageous people talking about ambiguous loss in a fairly personal way.  Questions they explore include:

  • What support could you have used?
  • What helped you in your grief?
  • What obstacles and victories did you experience?

Call-ins are possible.
