Orton Park Festival

Sun August 25, 2019 @ 9:00 am

Free
9:00 Jazz Brunch w/Bill Roberts Combo
12:00 Gin, Chocolate & Bottle Rockets
1:30 Combo Noir
3:00 Wood Chickens
4:30 Dos Santos
6:15 The Main Squeeze
Set your alarm clock and get up early, ’cuz the Jazz Brunch opens at 9:00 am and the line forms quickly. While you’re enjoying your breakfast, chill to the blues guitar, soulful bass, piano and drum sounds of the Bill Roberts Combo.
Post-brunch, shift your gaze to the main stage for Gin, Chocolate & Bottle Rockets, who will energize the park with the combined musical stylings of three solo-artists-turned-bandmates, Jen Farley, Shawni Marks and Beth Kille. Named “Ensemble Vocalists of the Year” at the 2015 MAMA Awards, GC&BR features clever pop-rock songwriting and tight 3-part harmonies, and has been described as “a little sass, a little sweet, and a whole lot of fire.” Clearly, something for everyone here. 12:00 pm.
Next up at 1:30 pm is the fresh ensemble Combo Noir, fronted by well known local singer Anna Purnell (of Yid Vicious, Forward! Marching Band, and Dixie Sizzlers fame). With sounds that are dark, luscious, and soulful, Combo Noir creates a groovy, bluesy mood.
Then hold onto your hats for Wood Chickens! These local favs will deliver a kick in the pants with rockin’, foot-stompin’, cowpunk action! Hear the band that is packing the clubs with their irresistibly fun songs like “We Skate in Boots” and “Mall Cop.” Wood Chickens take the stage at 3:00 pm.
Our penultimate act, Dos Santos, takes the stage at 4:30 pm. This Chicago-based quintet, has influences in American popular and traditional Latin music, and is considered one of Chicago’s most potent, impactful performing groups. Experienced in performing a wide range of musical styles, these guys also have a history of involvement in arts education and social justice organizing. Their sound draws from this sonic, cultural, and political well of influence, and is guaranteed to make you move.
Closing out this year’s festival is The Main Squeeze. This dynamic 5-piece band got its start as a party jam band at the University of Indiana, where they soon began playing to sell-out crowds of frenzied college students. The Squeeze is now based in L.A. and has been weaving the veins of rock, funk, blues, and R&B into modern song stylings. 6:15 pm.
In addition to great music, the Orton Park Festival will feature terrific local restaurant vendors, as well as craft beer, cider, and wine tents. Kids’ games, the infamous “cakewalk,” and the ever-popular MNA auction (both silent and live!) will return as well.
Orton is presented by Marquette Neighborhood Association with support from friends at Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center and other partners in the Festyland summer festival series.
