The Power of Storytelling in Sustainability

Mon August 7, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Sustainability is about people. It’s about you. It’s about all of us — together. To create a better future, we must honor the diverse experiences that make us human. But, at the same time, we must embrace the universal humanity that connects us all.

This program features a discussion facilitated by Sustain Dane, exploring the role of personal stories in the sustainability movement. Hear the voices of local sustainability champions, including Mario Garcia Sierra (Madison Gas and Electric, Centro Hispano), Alex Lindenmeyer (Short Stack Eatery), and Raj Shukla (Sustainable Madison Committee, River Alliance), who will share their sustainability stories, wisdoms, and hopes.

Through the art of storytelling, we dive into the idea of human(ity) — the duality of celebrating our diversity while deepening our connection. Add your voice, and share your story! Use the hashtag #MySustainabilityStory to join in the conversation.

After Sustain Dane hosts an Access Hour focused on the power of storytelling in the sustainability movement, it will be collaborating with storytelling artists to lead a storytelling workshop series in the late summer and early fall. The “Our Sustainability Stories” project will uncover and share stories of individuals from different backgrounds who incorporate principles of holistic sustainability and well-being in their daily lives. This initiative seeks to spread the art of storytelling to diverse communities as a method of connection, empowerment, and self discovery. The Sustain Dane project will highlight the human interconnections between people and the intersections between the systems that affect them – social, economic, and environmental – elevating the creative voices of those who are often underrepresented.
