CMJ, aka College Media Journal, was an online service that compiled music charts with independent underground labels and artists, including many non-commercial community and public stations among their reporters. They also published trade and consumer versions of their music magazine and held the CMJ Music Marathon, a week-long festival featuring the best new music in New York City each fall.
For almost 30 years, WORT participated in submitting charts to CMJ for our top 30, new adds, world, jazz, metal, electronic, hiphop and other genres. As a “core reporter,” the station got lots of attention from all the labels and promoters out there and this became the main way for them to discover our programs and send us promotional copies of music in all genres for airplay. So, after a period of uncertainty and despite plenty of promises to the contrary, in late February we were very sad to learn that CMJ had shut down without passing the business on.
Most of our listeners won’t be aware of any changes going on behind the scenes, but until there’s a stable, broad-ranging service to take its place, reporting our charts has become a lot trickier. NACC, the North American College and Community Chart, has been up for a few months with some of the same advantages as CMJ. However, at this time they’re only taking a top 30 and adds from stations. The site says they’re working on expanding to other genres, and with the official departure of CMJ hopefully that will be expedited. In the meantime we’re focusing primarily on rock/indie music and our top adds, but rest assured we’ll be getting back to the specialty genre charts in the near future, because We’re Still Here and going strong!!
