MADISON (WORT) — A controversial ban on sleeping outside the Madison City-County Building went into effect at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The ban was approved at the end of August by a joint committee overseeing the building. Those in favor have said it’s necessary because the space has become unsanitary and unsafe for those working in the City-County building.
Those opposed to the ban say it further criminalizes homelessness while abdicating collective responsibility for addressing root causes. The Madison-Area Urban Ministry organized a news conference in front of the building Thursday as the sun went down and temperatures dropped.
