A Teamsters Local 174, representing concrete workers in Washington state who went on strike in 2017, and later sued by the company, Glacier Northwest, for damages of lost concrete, was heard by the Supreme Court on January 10th, 2023, in an unusual “end-around” — bypassing the National Labor Relations Board evaluation of this work stoppage. In her review of the presentation, Marjorie Cohn, Professor of Law Emerita at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego, California, and a former president of the National Lawyers Guild, reported on the proceedings and talks about the potential repercussions of the case as “eviscerating labor unions’ right to strike”, in this part one of two interview broadcasts.
