Reports from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers near the U.S. – Mexico border continue to detail horrific conditions for migrants detained while seeking asylum in the United States. Brownsville pediatrician Dolly Lucio Sever described centers in Clint, and Ursula, Texas as “torture facilities,” with seriously ill children denied medical care, a lack of soap, toothbrushes, lights on 24-hours a day. Border patrol officers in the Ursula facility described detained, living immigrants as “bodies.” At least 22 immigrants have died in ICE custody since President Donald Trump took office. Meanwhile, Congress, pundits and commentators furiously debate whether or not these facilities can properly be called “concentration camps.” Journalist Andrea Pitzer is the author of “One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camp.” She joined Monday Buzz host Brian Standing on July 1, 2019.
