Last week, President Joe Biden signed the $847 billion National Defense Authorization Act, outlining military policy and budget priorities for the next year. Included in that massive bill was the authorization of a new $350 million icebreaker for the Great Lakes to keep the lakes open for shipping vessels.
To learn more about icebreaking on the Great Lakes, and why a new icebreaker is needed, WORT Producer Nate Wegehaupt spoke with Jim Weakley, President of the Lake Carriers’ Association.
Jim Weakley has been president of the Lake Carriers’ Association since 2003, and often testifies before Congress on behalf of the Great Lakes shipping industry.
The Lake Carriers’ Association is a trade group representing US-flagged shipping vessels on the Great Lakes.
