In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court extended Qualified Immunity protections to law enforcement officers. The decision effectively shielded officers from lawsuits seeking financial damages for civil rights violations.
In the ensuing 54 years, the protection has been widely condemned by civil rights groups.
Now, a Dane County Supervisor is floating a proposal that asks federal and state lawmakers to end Qualified Immunity.
