“Don’t let the wheelchair fool ya!” That’s the catch phrase of Autumn Neugent, Ms. Wheelchair Wisconsin 2019. For today’s show, we’re joined by Autumn and fellow wheelchair warrior Thabiso Rowan, options counselor at Disability Hub MN, to shine a light on disability activism and advocacy.
Over the course of the hour, Autumn and Thabiso share what it means to express disability in a positive way and have “ability awareness” that acknowledges and embraces the diverse abilities of all people. They also discuss the semantics of self-definition when it comes to dis/abilities, accessibility in housing and public accommodations, and the dynamics of both giving and receiving help and assistance.
The song played at the beginning of the show is “Let It Go” by Gaelynn Lea. You can watch a live performance of the song here.
