This week on Earthlinks, Deb Biechler discusses the white nose syndrome epidemic among bats. She interviews Paul White about the disease, which is a fungus that affects bat’s hibernation, which leads to death and starvation. It was discovered in New York, but now can be found in Wisconsin and many other states. There is no cure to this illness, but many scientists are working to help slow or stop it. To help, you can report bat roosts to be counted, help count roosts, learn to use bat listening devices to see the calls of bats and identify them, donate to the conservation fund, and report sick or dead bats.
